K1200LT still a great bike
Even though BMW stopped producing the K1200LT in 2009, it remains one of the great touring bikes. It won numerous awards for best touring bike during its 12 year history and has a large and loyal following on many websites and an annual rally for enthusiasts. Ultimately replaced in 2011 by the more powerful and lighter GTL it still gets the nod for best luxury touring bike. The GTL is more a sport tourer and sacrifices some comfort and protection to keep the weight down.
There were a few problems with the bike, the most notable being a final drive failure on some 5% of the LTs. BMW eventually did some redesign on this component and it seems to have addressed the issue. There is some debate on whether this issue was caused by a design problem or a misalignment during the build. There were also some people who experienced an oil weep into the clutch area requiring replacement of the clutch plates. This issue was preventable by drilling a small hole to prevent fluid buildup.
The engine was bullet proof and the rest of the chassis and components were solid. This is a bike that can be expected to deliver hundreds of thousands of kilometers of comfortable riding and one of my all time favorite motorcycles.
